Project Details
The goal for the film, “The Mozart of Table Tennis,” was to tell Mozart’s life story in three minutes or less. The time requirement was due to a competition where I submitted the film. The focus was table tennis since the game has been a part of his entire life. It wasn’t easy to produce an inspiring legacy film, but Mozart was very happy.
Since this film was submitted to a competition, I produced the video for free. It took a couple phone calls to explain to him what I had envisioned. During the interview, Mozart was very relaxed and excited to talk about the impact table tennis has had on his life. We had various stopping points to allow me to adjust camera settings as needed. He put a lot of trust in me by giving me full freedom to do what I wanted with the video.
In a strange way, I realized how much I like video production through his comments. He observed that I was blushing the entire shoot and to him I appeared very professional and even entertained with my camera gear. “Oh,” he said. “Now I know exactly what you like doing, besides table tennis!” I appreciated his candor and since then I dove into the deep end of video production. Mozart is currently running the Boston Table Tennis Academy in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Inspiring Legacy Film
Here are a few key moments during the film. Keep in mind that this was shot towards the end of the COVID lockdown. Life was still tense and doing shoots even at that time was considered a health risk. Aside from the inherent dangers, I took interest in how Mozart coached his adult students in a group setting, as well as individually. He’s known to push people’s athletic abilities to their limits. In addition, he has excellent technique in his table tennis strokes.
